I am Dr. Otto Awkward. I very much enjoy my
profession, ornithology, or the study of birds. I have been
living in this
area in order to
record the songs of your local species. I
find it interesting to compare the variations in songs of the same species between different regions. I
have recorded
thousands of bird calls during my career. My favorite group to study is owls.
The other day I discovered a fine Barred Owl
perched in a tree during the day. Since I know that owls
tend to call when they are ready to leave the perch and begin hunting, I carefully and
quietly set up my recording equipment and waited for dusk, the
preferred hunting time for owls, and sat in wait. Much to
my disappointment, the owl awoke and silently flew away. Over the next several days this
pattern repeated.
My only conclusion is that, given the recent weather, the owl just
thought it was too hot to hoot.
