Lone Elk Park is a beautiful park and fun place to see animals
such as elk, bison, wild turkeys, waterfowl and deer up close. The
park has a beautiful lake, trails, picnic tables and a shelter.
Animals at not allowed to be brought into the park, even confined
in your car, and motorcycles are also prohibited. Park Hours are 8
a.m. to one half hour past official sunset, except when
reservations are issued. Hmmm, St Louis County Parks website
reports the park opening at 8 a.m., yet sgtmta reports the park
sign says 7 a.m. Thanks for the info sgtmta.
The park was once used for ammunition testing and storage during
World War II. After World War II ended, the land was turned into a
County Park with herds of bison and elk in 1948. The land returned
to the Federal Government during the Korean War for ammunitions
testing and the animals were killed. Years later, the tracks of one
lone bull elk were seen and apparently it had somehow survived. The
County owns the land and in the late 1960s six elk were brought in
from Yellowstone National Park, thanks to the efforts of the
children of the Rockwood School District and West St. Louis County
Lions Club. Bison from the St Louis Zoo were added in 1973 to the
west part of the park. In 1986 the World Bird Sanctuary (WBS)
opened up next to the park. Admission to the WBS is free and it is
worth visiting. Lone Elk Park is also adjacent to the Chubb Trail,
which makes a 7 mile trek from Lone Elk Park to West Tyson
Park.

NOTICE: Please be
respectful of the posted park hours. If you enter the park after

Special permission to
hide caches in St. Louis County parks is NOT needed as long as the
Groundspeak rules are followed. "Blanket Permission" has been
worked out in advance with the park service. DO NOT CALL THE PARK
as they cannot handle the calls. The Groundspeak cache reviewer
does need to know exactly how and where the caches are hidden and
what type of containers are used. The geocaching liaisons will
notify the park service of new caches. Remember NO AMMO BOXES or
PVC PIPE caches. |
