My First attempt at an Earthcache
As we walk each night the GeoDog (Mercedes) and I see a lot of fun and interesting things. She chases rabbits, and pulls me along. One night we came up on a site that struck my interest.
So I had to learn more and now I want to share what I had learned
When you approach the GZ you will notice a coal seam but from above the coal seam there is an unususal color of orangish red running over the coal so I had to look it up, and learned the following about Eastern Kentucky Geology
Eastern Kentucky is made up of primarialy Pensylvanianian period rocks.
Pennsylvanian rocks in Kentucky are composed mostly of interbedded shale, sandstone, conglomerates, and coals. Thin limestone beds may also occur. Coal is Kentucky's leading mineral commodity. Because Kentucky has two areas of of coal-bearing Pennsylvanian strata, it produces a large amount of coal and ranks among the top three states in the Nation in annual coal production (between 160 and 180 million tons annually).
But this did not explain the color I am seeing, It is from a mineral that I know well. So now I will not give you the answer here...you will have to look and learn first.
To log this cache please e-mail me the answers to the following questions
1. What mineral would cause the color you are seeing at the GZ (the Orange/Red color).
2. About how thick is the coal seam at the GZ? an estimate will be fine.
3. What geologic period is represented at the GZ?
4. What natural resource is being Mined/Drilled/Pumped near the GZ?
(Optional) Please post a Picture of yourself/your team at the GZ with the coal seam behind you.
