Here is your chance to increase your knowledge of pickles.   So, grab a dill, sit down, pucker up and get crunching.

Pickles date back forty-five hundred years to Mesopotamia where it is believed cucumbers were first preserved.

According to Pickle Packers International, Inc., the trade and research association founded in 1893, the perfect pickle should exhibit seven warts per square inch for American tastes. However, Europeans prefer wartless pickles.

Pickles are technically a fruit. 

Americans consume about nine pounds of pickles per person.   The average dill pickle has only 15 calories.

In the Pacific Islands, natives pickle their foods in holes in the ground lined with banana leaves, and use them as food reserves in case of storms. The pickles are so valuable that they've become part of the courting process, helping a man prove he'll be able to provide for a woman. In Fiji, guys can't get a girl without first showing her parents his pickle pits.

Kool-Aid pickles have become a delicacy in the Mississippi Delta.  A Kool-Aid pickle is often called a Koolickle.

Columbus rationed pickles to his sailors to keep them from getting scurvy. He even grew cucumbers during a pit stop in Haiti to restock for the rest of the voyage. Columbus is credited with introducing pickles to the New World.  AmerigoVespucci, for whom America is named, was a pickle merchant in Seville, Spain before becoming an explorer.

Napoleon put up the equivalent of $250,000 as a prize to whoever could figure out the best way to pickle and preserve foods for his troops.  As a result, Nicholas Appert was the first person to commercially pack pickles in jars in 1820.  Napoleon and Julius Caesar rationed pickles to soldiers on their various military campaigns.  The U.S. government earmarked 40% of pickle production during World War II for the troops.

George Washington had a collection of 476 different kinds of pickles. In 850 BC Aristotle praised the healing benefits of the pickle.

Raw, lacto-fermented vegetables (pickles) have good bacteria that inhibit the growth of harmful microbes in the intestines.  They have a higher concentration of vitamin C.  They help you absorb iron better.  Research shows that vinegar can help with weight loss.


More than half the cucumbers grown in the U.S. are made into pickles.
