Geocache Description:

The hide is a micro big enough for a few SMALL swaps.
BYO writing implement.

Arguably the first specialised isolation and fever ward in Australia, the Queen Victoria Fever and Isolation Ward was constructed in 1897, several years before the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne.

Built to house Bubonic Plague victims (of which Victoria never had an outbreak), the centre mainly cared for patients suffering Tuberculosis, Scarlett Fever, Typhoid Fever, Whooping Cough, Diptheria and Polio.

With the introduction of modern antibiotics and vaccines, the centre was no longer required to care for patients in an isolation ward and as such was converted to an aged care facility in the 1950's.

It was renamed the warm and fuzzy Queen Victoria Cottages and remained in service until the 1990's when the Birches aged care facility opened across the road on the main hospital campus.

The old Queen Victoria building was then used as storage space until it was converted into the current Frances Hewett Community Centre and is again servicing the health needs of the Community.

Mrs Hewett, was Hamilton's first Lady being awarded an MBE in 1975 for her services to the Hamilton community including being the first female Councillor and first female Mayor
