A micro cache hidden near Whittington Church (motte and bailey).
One of the densest distributions of Norman castles outside the Welsh Border can be seen in Lunesdale. Beside many of the churches in the valley can be seen the earthwork remains. They were of a type known as 'motte and bailey' castles, consisting of a high earthen mound (the motte) with a larger enclosure (the bailey) next to it. Both would have been topped with timber stockades. The motte represented a refuge or the private rooms for the owners, while the bailey held a hall, kitchens, stables, workshops and all the building associated with the running of a large landed estate.
The motte here is perhaps the least obvious in the valley, but the church (rebuilt in 1875 with a 15th century tower) is on an ancient site within the crescent-shaped bailey. The natural hillside has been shaped into a motte.
Other caches in this series are at Hornby/Gressingham (Castle Stede), Melling and Arkholme.
The cache is situated outside the churchyard and is not in the wall. This cache meets the Urban Placement Guidelines
