“Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.”
- Robert Frost
It’s the ultimate face-off between fire and ice: Jacob Black, the steamy werewolf, and Edward Cullen, the dreamy vampire, or “cold one,” who are vying for the affection of Bella Swan in Stephenie Meyer’s popular “Twilight” series.
This cache is lovingly placed by Twi-hards who put forth the following challenge: to unite Pocket Jacob (our 7-inch plastic Jacob doll; Travel Bug #TB4KWJR) with Pocket Edward (owned by the innkeepers of the Miller Tree Inn in Forks, Wash., known as the “Cullen House” for its likeness to the Cullen family’s home in Forks, Wash., as described in the book).
Sure, Pocket Edward may have his own blog, parading about his whereabouts, but does he really have the girl? It’s the ultimate showdown, and to prove Pocket Jacob has traveled the world to profess his undying love for Bella, we want fellow geocachers to document his time along his way to and from the Miller Tree Inn by taking pictures of him at “Twilight” sites from the books, movies, even filming locations (and, of course, other places along the way). Remember, Jacob is a werewolf, so he feels most at home in the woods, where he can easily slay vampires, when he’s not out proving himself.
The goal is to take a picture of Pocket Jacob with Pocket Edward in front of the Miller Tree Inn. Once Jacob is in Forks and you have him in your possession, call the Miller Tree Inn (go to www.millertreeinn.com for the number) and arrange the meeting with the innkeepers, who are expecting the call. After you take the photo, post it here, then place Pocket Jacob in a nearby cache (be sure to stop by the Quileute reservation in La Push, Wash., where he lives), to travel back through Twilight territory and eventually home.
“Twilight” locations may include:
In the U.S.:
*Santa Clarita, Calif. (this is where the crew shot the hotel scene and Bella’s house in “Twilight,” which were actually set in Arizona)
*Phoenix, Ariz. (where Bella and her mom lived before Bella moved to Forks, Wash., to be with her dad)
*Portland, Ore., and surrounding woods and beach parks (where filming took place, including the View Point Inn, where the prom scene was shot)
*St. Helens, Ore., and environs (where filming took place, including The Carver Café in Carver, Ore.)
*Seattle, Wash. (this is where the bad vampires went on a killing spree)
*Port Angeles, Wash. (several possibilities here, as Twi-hards know; Edward and Bella’s first date was at La Bella Italia restaurant, which is actually Bella Italia in Port Angeles, where Bella ate mushroom ravioli—extra points if you get a pic of Jacob ordering it)
*La Push, Wash. (the Quileute Indian reservation where Jacob lives; maybe he can take part in the weekly drum circle at the community center?!? And, of course, he should stop home to say hello to Billy, his father, and walk First Beach, where he tells Bella the legend of the Quileute werewolves and Cullen “cold ones”)
*Forks, Wash. (where Bella moved to live with her dad, Charlie; go ahead and do the whole “Twilight” tour —stopping at various locations important to the series; a map is available at the Chamber of Commerce. A plus: say hi to Sergio at Pacific Pizza and get a pic of him with the Jacob doll—don’t forget to try the to-die-for Hawaiian Pizza, or order off the “Twilight” menu.
*Georgia (more filming locations)
*Florida (where Bella’s mom moves to be with her new husband, Phil)
Outside the U.S.:
*Vancouver, B.C.
*Florence, Tuscany, and Volterra Italy
*Rio de Janeiro
*Isle Esme (not real, but private island off of Rio)
Please keep Pocket Jacob moving; remember, he’s got vampires to kill and has no time to sit around.
In addition to setting Pocket Jacob out on his journey, this “Twilight” cache is designed as a place to exchange “Twilight”-related trinkets and mementos (you can use your creativity!). Or just sink your fangs into the find. (You'll want to locate it before twilight so your access isn't denied.) Please be sure to sign the logbook and indicate if you are Team Edward or Team Jacob. And watch out for the blood suckers--mosquitoes, that is.
FTF=official "Twilight" trading cards we were given by the kind folks at the Forks Chamber of Commerce.
Happy hunting...
