People familiar with our hides would recognize this as being one of ours instantly. Not saying if that's good or bad... Anyway, during our extensive travels in the West Bend area over the last couple of years, Carol and I have always kept our eyes open for interesting and unusual locations. You guys have done a fabulous job of showing many of them to us, but we've found one more.
As we were caching our way out of town and heading back home, we came across a very unusual historical marker. The marker itself has very little information, but thanks to the data we've obtained through many hours of research, we can now tell you that this cache is located at the former site of The West Bend Corset Company's factory. The factory appareantly operated from at least the 1860's until some time in the early 1960's.
We have included a couple of archival photos on this cache page. One photo is from the company's early days, and the other from its last days. The information we have found suggests the company closed soon after the wife of one of its directors was charged with and convicted of the murder of her husband. In spite of intense research, we cannot find a motive for the murder.
Further information about this company is either nonexistant or will be very hard to find. However, if you happen to have any other historical info, please do include it in your log.
