Geocache Description:

Roman Bridge, Santa Clara-a-Velha

Desfrutem!

The D. Maria Bridge, also known as the Roman Bridge by the locals, dates from the eighteenth century and used to connect the two banks of the Mira River, in Santa Clara-a-Velha, Odemira. It is probably known as the Roman Bridge for being on the route of an ancient Roman road connecting Alcácer do Sal to Portimão. However, there is no trace of such an ancient bridge, therefore it is argued that the crossing was probably done by boat.

Nearby you can enjoy the peaceful harmony of a typical Alentejo’s village, as well as the beautiful Santa Clara’s dam, once the largest artificial lake in Portugal.
Santa Clara-a-Velha, a bright and flowery village surrounding the church of St. Clara de Assis, almost stopped in the past, deserves a closer look. There is also a pleasant picnic area near the Azinhal Fountain.
Enjoy!
