Rey Cross Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been disabled for some time and as the owner has not repaired it I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Many thanks,

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

You will need to be very careful at the location, especially if you are with children, as the A66 is an extremely busy road and the lay-by gets quite busy too.

You will also need to be careful as it is a very high muggle area.

The location is wheel-chair accessible but it may be difficult, if in a wheelchair, to reach the actual cache location.

The Rey Cross

In AD954 Stainmore was the site of an important battle fought between the Viking army of King Eric Bloodaxe and their enemies which included the Angles of Northumbria, north of the Tees.

Eric Bloodaxe was a red-headed Norseman who had a Danish mother. He was one of the most notorious of Viking kings with an heroic reputation for success in battle both in Norway and overseas. Eric’s luck finally ran out at Stainmore when his Viking army were heavily defeated. Bloodaxe, along with five other loyal Viking leaders, lost their lives.

The point where Eric Bloodaxe met his death is marked by the ancient Rey Cross. The cross was set up by Edmund, King of Northumbria to mark the boundary between Northumbria, England and Strathclyde, Scotland. It was, originally, a wheel0headed cross, which stood around en feet high and had carvings down two sides of the shaft, but all that is left now, is the top part of the shaft and the base plinth. The carvings can no longer be seen.

The Rey Cross once stood a little west of its current location, on the south-side of the road, in the Roman Marching Camp, but was moved when the road was widened and now stands on the north-side of the road and can be access from the east-bound carriage-way only.

Rey is a Viking word which means boundary.

The cache is only big enough for a log book and a small pencil but you may need to bring your own pen/pencil as the pencil we included is not very big.

Please sign the log with name and date only please.

Please replace the cache in exactly the same location and orientation as you find it.
