Geocache Description:

The Wellpark in Greenock sits high on a hill overlooking the east side of the town centre and, yes, it got its name from the ornamental well which is situated in the park.
It was constructed in the early 1600’s for the Shaw family whose castle was situated nearby. The castle was replaced by the Mansion House which was built in 1635 but demolished in 1886 as the land was required for the extension of the railway line to Gourock.

The house maybe gone but the well remains. It is caped and enclosed by railings but has survived intact for nearly 400 years. A faded engraved date of 1629 can just be made out on the east facing side of the well. The worn steps up to the well indicated how much it was used over the years.

Wellpark is opened 24/7 and can be accessed by various gates. It can be quite a climb from the town centre but the main entrance on Regent Street is on the flat. The closest gate to the cache site is on Lynedoch Street but that is normally kept closed.

The cache is magnetic so remember to bring a pen/pencil with you. Please ensure the cache is repaced where found as parts of the area have a poor magnetic hold.
