Geocache Description:

SGF: Seria GEMERSKYCH kostolov so stredovekymi FRESKAMI

Series from GEMER region - churches with medieval FRESCOES

STITNIK

SK

EN
Stitnik is today just a small site in the Gemer region, but the local historic architecture could tell us something about its importance in the past:
the medieval church with a monumental tower (today evangelistic) – the building of a three-nave basilical church began in the 14th century and was completed at the end of the 15th century with construction of the net- and star-vaultings, in the 16th century the town joined the Reformation and because the Protestants had objections against worshiping of saints painted in pictures or carved in altars, they covered the large medieval internal mural paintings with limewash – these mural paintings were discovered and exposed just since the turn of 19/20th centuries. The paintings come from three periods: end of 14th century, end of 15th century and beginning of 16th century and they present various narratives from the Bible – scenes from the life of Christ, of the saints and parables and an allegory of the Seven Liberal Arts as well. Because of this painted decoration the church has been visited by a number of lovers of medieval art – if you do not manage to get inside, you can see at least a restored part of a St. Christophorus mural painting outside on the southern wall of the church. (Figures of St. Christophorus above life-size were in Middle Ages oft painted on exterior church walls because he was the patron of the wayfarers and a defendor against sudden death and it was eligible by leaving the home to have a view on the figure of this saint.) If you manage to get inside, above the beautiful mural paintings and Renaissance and Baroque church benches you may find the Renaissance high altar with an interesting detail on its sides – the narrative of Jonah: the great fish (here in a shape of a dolphin) just swallowed up Jonah on the left side and on the right side the fish spitting out Jonah ...
once in the 15th century a moated castle of the Bebek-family, in the 16th century rebuild with four wings and cannon tower on the corners, in the 18th century hardly damaged during the uprising of Rakoczi, so at the beginning of the 19th century only the western wing was reconstructed as a small manor-house flanked with two towers. and the other mural rests were used as a picturesque ruin in the park founded around in the place of the previous fortification and the moat – today you can see only the rests of the castle, surrounded by various housing and stores – the area is usually opened only during the working hours ...
the townhall from the end of the 18th century: the house Nr. 28 in the main square
the pest-column in front of the Catholic church was built at the beginning of the 18th century as a pest-memorial
a Rococco manor-house from the 18th century – pay attention to the pretty lattices in the windows: they have now just a sad view to the decline of this formerly rich town of miners and craftsmen
