A series of 40 caches set to commemorate Hubblegardner reaching 4000 caches. One cache for every 100 finds.
This speaks for itself. At the time of writing his total hides were 352 - making him the fourth most prolific cache setter in Scotland. That definitely deserves a mention in this celebration of his caching career.
Before we knew him personally, he went through a stage of setting clever and unusual caches – for example capsules hidden in fake caterpillars, or in the roots of fake grass, or inside fake mushrooms. My favourite was one hidden in the mouth of a rubber snake that he’d placed along a walk called the Serpentine. We all thought that he’d made these caches himself and admired his ingenuity, skill and commitment. How did he think up such great ideas? How did he then go about physically making them? How much time did he spend in the evenings making them? We imagined him to have a little workshop in the bottom of his garden where he’d spend many a night creating these caches. Then we found out that he’d actually bought them all from eBay. Credit must be given though for the imagination behind his now archived Balcurvie cache – which was a cracker.
His hides vary from cache and dashes to longer hikes, where he’s put out a trail to keep you occupied as you go. They’re set in places that are scenic, places that you never knew about and places where there is a big tree. It really doesn’t seem to matter where he puts them, the number of favourites on them are a testament to how much his caches are enjoyed – so let’s say a big thankyou to HG for his Hides Galore!
