Geocache Description:

This is the Really Useful Cache filled with Really Useful Swag. It’s also in a Really Useful Box!

Finders are encouraged to exchange Really Useful items in the Really Useful Cache. Feel free to be creative and let us know in your log what useful items you’ve exchanged. Have fun!

In looking for a place to hide this cache, we wanted it to be a place true to its name – Really Useful. We thought long and hard with ideas of schools, libraries, stores, but while useful these places were not cache-worthy. Then like a dam bursting, the idea struck:

Hoover Dam, in Blendon Township, near Westerville, Ohio, dams the Big Walnut Creek to form the Hoover Memorial Reservoir. This reservoir is a major water source for the city of Columbus, Ohio. It holds 20.8 billion gallons of water and has a surface area of 3,272 acres (13.24 km2), or about five square miles. At less than a hundred feet high, the dam is, however, much smaller than the better-known Hoover Dam on the Colorado River.

The dam was dedicated in 1955. It was named for two brothers, Charles P. Hoover and Clarence B. Hoover, to honor their careers with the City of Columbus Waterworks.

Construction facts: Quantity of concrete: approximately 180,000 cubic yards; Quantity of earth fill: approximately 600,000 cubic yards; Length of spillway: 680 feet (210 m); Length of dam: 2,583 feet (787 m); Maximum height of dam: approximately 94 feet (29 m) above stream bed; Uncontrolled spillway elevation: 890 feet (270 m) mean sea level; Top of dam elevation: 911 feet (278 m) mean sea level.

In addition to supplying water to the city of Columbus, the dam also serves as a useful recreation area for jogging, fishing, boating, picnicking, Frisbee Golf, etc. and is a perfectly useful place for our Really Useful cache.

You’ll be looking for a Really Useful Box filled with Really Useful swag. For placement of this cache we borrowed a few ideas from some of the cool caches we’ve seen on our recent adventures. Our Camo is in the same fashion used by BigBill54 in GC17G8N and the placement bears a slight resemblance to plasmafamily’s GC1ZRNG. Thanks to both BigBill54 and the plasmafamily for the ideas.

Some notes about this cache: While the cache itself is kid friendly, the location may not be. There are lots of kid friendly areas nearby though where the kids can play while the older cachers do the retrieving. There is poison ivy in the area, however there’s something of a path that can be followed to the cache, so no serious bushwhacking or poison ivy encounters should be necessary. A final caution to watch your footing. Flip Flops are discouraged. And finally, bug spray will be a Really Useful item to bring with you on your quest.
