This cache is in the same location as the original Prison Farm Cache (GC1P734). It was recently archived and after checking with the cache owner, we decided to re-place this cache because its such a neat location.
This cache is located in the Monongahela National Forest near the Cranberry Glades and at the location of the now defunct Mill Point Federal Prison Camp. The minimum security prison was active from the late 30's to the late 50's and housed 300 inmates at a time.
The best access to the cache is by driving Route 55 about 0.6 miles west of the intersection of 55/150 to the junction of Forest Service Road 102.
Take FS Road 102 about 0.6 miles and park at the Charles Creek Trailhead. The rest of the trip requires a hike of about 0.4 miles on the Charles Creek Trail to the cache.
Continue down the trail approximately 0.1 miles past the cache to the field where you'll find some great informational signs telling the history of the Mill Point Federal Prison.
Ground zero for this cache is the former location of the "Staff Housing" for the Prison Camp. You can see a picture of this place in its original form on one of the informational signs mentioned above.
Care should be taken during hunting season and Forest Service Road 102 is not plowed for snow.
Please refrain from leaving scented or food items in this cache. Quite a few caches (the original Prison Farm Cache included) have been sniffed out and destroyed by bears up in this area and its usually due to a scented/food item left in the cache. Thanks in advance!
