Woodstock's rare and confused bridge Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Aiwendil67: The bushes at the final coords are indeed gone, and the container with them. As no real viable hiding spot is left at gz, I reluctantly have to archive this one. I'd hate to see this one go, so I may rework it in the spring and unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coords but it is your starting point, go to the posted coords and look for the date on this side of the bridge and write that down as ABCD. To find the final add A+B then multiply by 5, subtract this two digit number from the posted N coords. To find the final multiply CxD and subtract this number from the posted W coords.

Welcome to Woodstock's rare and confused bridge. Most people go thru this little gem without even thinking twice but this structure is actually an extremely rare example of a helicoidal or a spiral arch bridge. I won't bog you down with all of the engineering details but it has to do with the bricks being laid in a spiral formation because of the skewed angle the tracks and the road make. Each side of this bridge has a different date on it so at first glance it may seem like it doesn't know how old it is and may be confused. The two dates reflect the original and an addition that was made some years later when a second railroad track was added.

So next time you go thru this bridge look at the dates and also the brick work underneath and discover a little piece of history.
