Der Wengsee ist ein idyllischer Waldsee im Tauferer Ahrntal. Mit seinen 100m Länge, 90m Breite und, an seiner tiefsten Stelle, 9m Tiefe, ist er ein stattlicher See. Wenn man am Südhang ein Stück hinaufsteigt, zeigen sich dann nicht nur die näheren Ahrntaler Berge, sondern es blickt sogar der vergletscherte Hochfeiler gemeinsam mit seinen Trabanten hier herüber. Von seiner besonderen Seite zeigt sich der See im Frühsommer und im Herbst, wenn sich die Lärchen im tiefblauen Wasser spiegeln. Gegen Ende Juni oder Anfang Juli blühen die Alpenrosen, die dem sonst schon malerischen See einen besonderen Charme verleihen. Seinen Namen hat er dem Wenghof unten im Tal zu verdanken. "Weng" stammt vom mittelhochdeutschen "wanc" und heißt so viel wie Grasfläche, was sich in diesem Falle auf den Hof bezieht, denn der Wengsee an sich ist von dichtem Wald umgeben.
Der Weg zum See ist sehr steil und erfordert daher schon eine gewisse Gehtüchtigkeit, aber er ist nicht übermäßig lang. Startpunkt für die Wanderung ist nahe der Häusergruppe Mairhöfe im Mühlwalder Tal kurz vor der Ortschaft Mühlwald. Man folgt den Wegweisern Wengalm und Wengsee, die Talstraße südwärts verlassend, und dann auf breiter Brücke über den Talbach. Auf schmaler Straße geht es dann neben dem Bach ein Stück talaus bis in die Nähe des Stockerhofs; danach rechts auf dem Fußweg 66 durch den felsdurchsetzten Wald und über eine größere steile Lichtung empor bis zur Wengalm auf 1769 m. Diese ist allerdings nicht bewirtschaftet. Von dort folgt man weiterhin der Markierung Nr. 66 hinauf zum Rand der Wiese und schließlich fast eben den Wald querend in 20 Minuten zum See (1881 m). Die Dauer für den Aufstieg beträgt ungefähr 2 Stunden.

The Wengsee (Lake Weng) is an idyllic forest lake in Tauferer Ahrntal. With its 100 m length, 90 m wide and, at its deepest point, 9 m depth, he is a stately lake. In the early summer and autumn, the lake shows its particular side when the larches are reflected in the deep blue water. Towards the end of June or early July the rhododendrons bloom, and they give it a beautiful charm. The Wengsee owes his name to the “Wenghof” (Weng’s farm) down in the valley. "Weng" is derived from Middle High German "wanc" and means something like grass, which refers in this case to that farm, because the Wengsee itself is surrounded by dense forest.
The path to the lake is very steep and therefore requires certain stamina, but he is not overly long. Starting point for the hike is close to the group of houses “Mairhöfe” just before the village “Mühlwald”. Follow the signs “Wengalm Wengsee”, leaving the valley road on south, and then on a wide bridge over the mountain stream. In the vicinity of the “Stockerhof” (Stocker`s farm), take the path 66 on your right through the boulder-strewn forest and over a larger clearing up to Wengalm (1769 m). From there you continue to follow the trail No. 66 up to the edge of the meadow and finally through the forest to the lake in 20 minutes (1881 m). The duration of this hike takes about 2 hours.

Il lago di Venga è un lago idilliaco in Valle Aurina. Con i suoi 100 m di lunghezza, 90 m di larghezza e la sua profondità di 9 m è un lago abbastanza prestante. Se si sale un pezzo sul versante sud, ci si affacciano non solo le montagne della valle Aurina più vicina, ma si vede anche il Gran Pilastro ghiacciato. All'inizio dell'estate e in autunno il lago si presenta dal suo lato particolare, quando i larici si specchiano nel blu profondo dell'acqua. Verso la fine di giugno o all'inizio di luglio i rododendri sbocciano e gli conferiscono un fascino straordinario. Il suo nome tedesco “Wengsee”, il lago lo deve alla masseria “Wenghof” a fondovalle. "Weng" deriva dal tedesco classico "wanc" e significa più o meno manto erboso, e in questo caso si riferisce alla masseria, siccome il lago è circondato da un bosco fitto.
Il percorso al lago è molto ripido e richiede quindi una certa condizione, pero non è troppo lungo. Dal paese di Mühlwald si scende verso est al gruppo di case “Mairhöfe” (1100 m circa). Si attraversa su largo ponte il torrente, seguendo poi la segnaletica “Wengalm-Wengsee”. Passati accanto al maso “Stocker”, si gira a destra sul sentiero 66, che s’inerpica nel bosco pietroso e su ripida radura, fino a raggiungere la malga “Wengalm” (1769 m, chiusa). Dalla baita si prosegue sul 66, per pascoli e poi nel bosco quasi pianeggiante fino al lago (1881 m; 20 minuti dalla malga, ore 2 dal fondovalle). Si torna sulla via dell’andata in tempo minore.
