Whitnall Highway

MOVIE
"Alpha Dog" (2006), directed by Nick Cassavetes, and starring Emile Hirsch, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone.

SCENE
Johnny Truelove, Frankie Ballenbacher, and Tiko Martinez tackle and kidnap Zack Mazursky to hold him as ransom for a drug debt.

WHITNALL HIGHWAY
Whitnall Highway was intended to be California State Route 64 which would have crossed either east or southeast (depending on various proposals) through the San Fernando Valley. It would have gone through where you're currently standing, then cut south through a proposed 2-mile tunnel through Griffith Park, finally merging with the southbound Normandie Freeway (also never built) which ended in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles. Instead of turning into a freeway, the right-of-way was used for the overhead power lines, underground water and gas lines, private property, parking lots, plant nurseries, dog parks, and public parks. This map traces the visible remains of the route.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES
The kidnapping scene is based on the real-life 6 August 2000 kidnapping of Nicholas Markowitz in West Hills, Los Angeles. This was fictionalized to take place somewhere near Claremont, but the scene was filmed here at Whitnall Highway in North Hollywood, Los Angeles. I scouted this location on 4 October 2004 and we later filmed on the afternoons of 8-9 November 2004. On the first morning, we also filmed at the parking lot of nearby Circus Liquor, and on the second morning, we filmed inside Val Surf for a scene that would later be edited from the movie.

By the way, on that second afternoon, my German Shepherd dog had a cameo in the movie. See picture #005 above for Sadie's appearance with actress Nancy De Mayo as kidnapping witness Dale Dierker. This was the second of what would eventually be my dog's sixteen movie roles. Thus, in honor Sadie, you'll find the geocache somewhere near the Whitnall Highway Dog Park, directly across the street from the filming location.

CACHE
You're looking for a magnetic nano cache container. Due to its potential visibility by muggles and canines alike, please be sure to put the cache back in its exact spot.
