Raigmore Hospital in Inverness is the district general hospital for patients in the North, Mid, and South East Community Health Partnership areas of The Highland Health Board. It takes patients from Wick and Thurso, Fort William and “all the places in between”. Geographically, it is the largest Health Board, covering an area of 32,500 km². It is also a teaching hospital in association with the Universities of Aberdeen and Stirling.
There has been a hospital on this site since 1941. The single storey wartime wards continued to be used for a further three decades, until the construction of the present buildings.
Amongst other medical services supplied during this period, the hospital provided the main maternity unit for the Highlands. (Both our children were born in the old hospital). In 1970 the first of a series of new buildings were opened, including accident and emergency, radiology and radiotherapy, laboratory, out-patient services and medical departments.
The hospital has progressively taken over almost all the provision of services previously performed by older hospitals in Inverness such as Culduthel hospital, which closed in 1989 and Hilton which closed in 1987.
In the grounds of the hospital, is Maggie's Highlands, a drop in centre for people affected by cancer. It was opened on 7 June 2005. The building won the RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for Architecture in 2006, was designed by Scottish architectural firm Page\Park Architects and its gardens designed by landscape architect and designer Charles Jencks
