Geocache Description:

A small letterbox cache beside the Magnetawan River, just upstream of Sand Lake.

I'm putting this cache up for adoption now (Oct. 2019), along with most of my others. Unfortunately following heart surgery I have ended up paralyzed and am no longer able to get out and do the maintenance required, let alone find new caches. I will archive all these caches at the end of the year if they are not adopted. Alternatively you can just collect the cache, let me know and I will archive it. Thanks for your help. This is a letterbox cache, containing a small logbook, an inkpad and a rubber stamp - no room for trading items. DON'T TRADE FOR THE RUBBER STAMP! If you haven't letterboxed before, the idea is to carry your own unique rubber stamp with you and use it to stamp my logbook. You may also carry your own cumulative letterbox logbook , and use my rubber stamp to stamp your own logbook. But if you don't want to worry about all this, just draw me a happy face, or a tree or something else interesting. The Magnetawan River is one of Ontario's great interesting rivers, originating in Algonquin Park, east of this cache, and flowing all the way west to Georgian Bay. It was heavily used during the logging era to float logs downstream. The river flows through Kearney, Burk's Falls, Magnetawan, and several lakes on it's way, and much of it is canoeable, with some great canoe routes. In fact, it was used in Bill Mason's famous film 'Waterwalker'. Further downstream, locks were built at Magnetawan, so steamboats could travel up to the railway station at Burk's Falls. The locks are still in use, and you can see them right beside the road into the village. Here you are a long way upstream though, and the narrow channel, sand bars and fallen trees block any river travel. There is safe parking on both sides of the road on the south side of the bridge, and a short steep bank to climb down on the east side to get to the cache. I think the cache should be winter friendly, but I'm not sure about winter friendly parking. Happy caching!
