This little church close to my home is strange in that there is no actual village, just a crossroads and the church nearby. My son Jack has an interest in old churchyards so I decided to place his cache here.
A small comngregation of Covenanters, Scottish exiles, erected a church here in 1778, while the graveyard dates back to 1808. Tommy Bryans, the Bard of Beltoy is among those buried there.
According to legend there was once a village here until one day a peddlar came selling matches, but nobody in Loughmourne would buy from him. He cursed the village and told the people that it would be gone by morning. Suddenly eels appeared in the local houses and they were followed by water, which rose until the village was gone.
In the late 1800s the Water Commissioners were draining the lake in preparation for engineering work and the remains of 5 dwellings appeared. The legend my not be true but there were houses in the lough!
The cache is a medium tab-lock box hidden low down. There is no need to enter the church grounds or graveyard, but if you do please be respectful.
