about one metre from single track road verge in ruined flax mill
Get ferry from Port Appin and cycle or walk. Ferry also available from Oban. This is the Island of Lismore's first Cache. The mill received water from Kilcheran loch. The stream reaches the sea nearby at an old ruined Lime Kiln. Many other places of interest to visit include Castle Coeffin - a ruined 13th century hall-house and courtyard probably built by the MacDougalls of Lorn, but later passed to the Campbells. The name is said to come from Caifen, a Viking prince whose sister was said to haunt the castle until her remains were returned to Norway to be buried by her lover's side.
Lismore was an important site within their lordship, being the location of St. Moluag's Cathedral, seat of the Bishop of Argyll. The first written evidence of the castle occurs in 1469–70, when it was granted to Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy by Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. It is unlikely to have been occupied in post-mediaeval times.
