Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the above coordinates but is within one mile.

In the middle of an estate of houses behind Stonegate Road stands a Victorian Gothic house, Meanwood Towers. Designed by Edward Welby Pugin, and built in 1866 - 1867, this private house was commissioned by Thomas Stewart Kennedy and was originally called Meanwood House. Mr Kennedy then commissioned the famous German organ-builder Edmund Schulze to build him a pipe organ. In 1869, this was installed in a specially-built 800-seat wooden concert hall or 'organ house'. However, after only 8 years, there were problems with the 'organ house', so the Schulze organ was loaned to St. Peter's Church, Harrogate; 2 years later, in 1879, it was sold to a private individual, who presented it to St. Bartholomew's Church, Armley.

Edward Welby Pugin (11 March 1834 – 5 June 1875) was the eldest son of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and Louisa Barton. His father, A. W. N. Pugin, was a famous architect and designer of Neo-Gothic architecture, and after his death in 1852 Edward took up his successful practice despite being aged only 18 at the time and having no formal training, his only qualification appearing to be that he had watched his father work.At the time of his own early death in 1875, Pugin had designed and completed more than one hundred Catholic churches . He designed churches and cathedrals primarily in the British Isles.
