While walking around the reserve looking for a nice spot to
place a cache I encountered a large Black Mamba sunning itself
after the rain lastnight. After that I decided to stop exploring
and find a far "safer" spot to hide something.
Black Mambas are dangerous snakes. Their bites can potentially
kill a human within 20 minutes, but death usually occurs after
30–60 minutes, sometimes taking up to three hours.
From WikiPedia : The
black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is the longest venomous snake
in Africa, averaging around 2.5 meters, and sometimes growing up to
4.3 meters. Its name is derived from the black colouration inside
the mouth rather than the actual colour of the skin which varies
from dull yellowish-green to a gun-metal grey. It is the fastest
snake in the world, capable of moving at 4.32 to 5.4 metres per
second.
Once you've turned off the main road,
please drive very carefully as the dirt road is quite rough
in some parts. I would only recommend driving past the listed
parking spot if you have a high-clearance vehicle or have someone
that can tow you out if you get stuck .
Even though the cache container is listed as a "micro", there
may be some space for some very small items.
