Tsuga heterophylla is a large evergreen coniferous tree growing to 165-230 ft tall with a trunk diameter of up to 9 ft. It is a very shade-tolerant, moisture loving, climax species of tree. Because of the very shade-tolerance, it is able to survive in a relatively dark understory, where it provides an important source of food for deer and elk. The death of overstory trees allows it to continue its growth. It is long-lived at 400-500 years in mature trees. Interestingly, the tallest known, named "Tsunami" (discovered on the day that the 2011 Japanese tsunami made landfall in nearby Crescent City), is 271 feet tall. Its bark is dark brown to reddish-brown, becoming thick and strongly grooved with age. Because of its thin bark and shallow roots, it is highly susceptible to fire, and is subject to severe windthrow. Tusga heterophylla is the state tree of Washington.
Located behind a gate that is locked when equipment is working or conditions are such that vehicular traffic will harm roadbed. However it is a short walk in from the main road.
WARNING WARNING WARNING
During hunting season, hunters may well be out and about. Be aware and have good care.
Congrats to Wildrose on the FTF
8/6/13: The gate hasn't been opened for the season as it usually is. It is unclear if it will be opened or left closed permanently. So cache is now just under 1/10th mile hike in. I've upped the difficulty to reflect this.
