Vila Franca do Campo Islet
.
The gz takes you to a special place in the islet. A place where you
can observe “through a window” all the islet and also
outside from it.

The islet is a volcanic cone of hidromagmatic origin, that
resulted from an underwater eruption, surtesian type . The islet is
now much dismantled by marine erosion, tectonic movements and
differential settlement.
.
Its composition is characterized by long palagonític tufts,
lithifiedin formations, and also by strong vertical fracturing and
some large underwater cavities.
.
Displays semicircular shape, with an opening through which the sea
penetrates freely into the crater. The crater, with a maximum depth
of 20 meters, forms an almost perfect circle. In the space left
by the submarine crater of the volcano, which formed the island, is
a lagoon located within the islet of Vila Franca do
Campo.

The bottom of the bay inside the island is composed of bare
rock, partially covered with sand, and the areas south and
southeast are the deepest ones. Besides the communication that the
bay performs with the sea through the entrance channel already
mentioned above, the fissures (fissures through which water enters
and leaves the crater) are important for the community of the bay,
to the extent that exchanges additional water and sand between the
bay and the open sea. The configuration of sand, shaped like a
crescent moon face, suffer certainly the influence of seasonal
factors, but also seems to result from the relative strength of the
water passing through the fissures and the prevailing wind
direction.

Geologically, at a submarine level, the fissures are among the
most typical habitats and protected area of greatest interest,
especially for underwater wildlife that live in less illuminated
places. We are on the presence of a geologicaly / biological place
of great interest. Fissures are primarily composed of basaltic
rock.

Another distinctive component of this set of rare geological beauty
is the Farilhão, a rock 20 m away from the Great islet with 32.5
meters height, crowned by Festuca petraea.
.
The island is about 500 meters from the coast of Vila Franca do
Campo village, and 1200 meters of Tagarete wharf . From Tagarete
port there are regular connections with the island during the
summer at a price of 4.5 euros per adult (free for children under
10 years old).

Please observe that this islet is classified as natural reserve
and is also classified as an Important Bird Areas by the Birdlife
International so, it’s not allowed to collect any
samples.

About the EarthCache:
.
Focusing mainly on the “fissure theme”, you will
have to perform four tasks:
.
a) estimate the width of the fissure that allows boats to enter in
the islet lagoon (hint: use your GPS to measure)
.
b) look around and indicate the number of existent fissures within
the islet lagoon
.
c) estimate the diameter of the lagoon from the islet of Vila
Franca do Campo: (hint: use your GPS to measure and go from one
point in the lagoon to it’s opposite side and find the
solution)
.
d) the lagoon is from: salt water? sweet water?
.
.
Being OPTIONAL, and since we appreciate images, publish
along with your log an image of the place (include yourself if you
want)

Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo 
.

O ilhéu é um cone vulcânico de origem hidromagmática, resultado de
uma erupção submarina, tipo surtesiano, muito desmantelado pela
erosão marinha, pelos movimentos tectónicos e por assentamentos
diferenciais. Na sua constituição predominam os tufos palagoníticos
muito litificados, em formações caracterizadas por forte
fracturação vertical, de que resultam grandes estruturas colunares
e algumas cavidades subaquáticas. Apresenta forma semicircular, com
uma abertura por onde o mar penetra livremente na cratera. A
cratera, com uma profundidade máxima de 20 metros, forma um círculo
quase perfeito. No espaço deixado pela cratera do vulcão submarino,
que deu forma ao ilhéu, encontra-se uma lagoa localizada dentro do
Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo.

O fundo da baía interior do ilhéu é composto por rocha nua
parcialmente coberta de areia, sendo as zonas sul e sudeste as mais
profundas. Para além da comunicação que a baía estabelece com o mar
através do canal estreito acima referido, as golas (fissuras
através das quais a água entra e sai da cratera) são importantes
para a comunidade da baía, na medida em que providenciam trocas
adicionais de água e areia entre a baía e o mar aberto. A
configuração do banco de areia em forma de crescente, sofre
certamente influência de factores sazonais, mas parece resultar da
força relativa da água que atravessa as fissuras e da direcção
predominante dos ventos.

Geologicamente, ao nível submarino, as golas encontram-se entre
os habitats mais típicos desta área protegida e de maior interesse,
sobretudo pela fauna ciáfila que abrigam. São, primordialmente,
constituídas de rocha basáltica.

Outra componente distintiva deste conjunto geológico de rara beleza
é o Farilhão, um rochedo afastado 20 m do Ilhéu Grande com 32,5 m
de altura, coroado por Bracel-da-rocha (Festuca petrae).

O ilhéu dista cerca de 500 metros da costa de Vila Franca, e 1200
metros do cais do Tagarete, no centro da vila. Deste porto existem
ligações regulares com o ilhéu durante a época balnear ao preço de
4,5 euros por adulto (gratuito para crianças até 10 anos).

Observe que está numa reserva natural também classificada como uma
importante área de aves (IBA – Important Bird Area) pela
Birdlife International. Não é permitido trazer nada do ilhéu.
