darkwing-m: We haven't been to La Palma for a while and are unable to carry out on-site maintenance at the moment. Now that the first "needs maintenance" request has come up, this is unfortunately the end of it for now. I hope someone will continue to use this place for in-depth information about the volcano.

Teneguia - Fire enlarges the ground

The island La Palma, which belongs to the Canary Islands (finally a part of Spain), is originally formed as a seamount by volcanic activity. The islands base lies about 4.000 m below sea level. The highest point of La Palma is the Roque de los Muchachos with a total height of 2.426 m. The shape of the island was formed by the volcan Taburiente and its collapse into the sea. For La Palma still lies above a hot spot, the volcanic activity did not stop until today! Since the Spanish occupation there have been seven eruptions:
1470-1492 Montaña Quemada
1585 Tajuya near El Paso
1646 Volcán San Martin
1677 Volcán San Antonio
1712 El Charco
1949 Volcán San Juan, Duraznero, Hoyo Negro
1971 Volcán Teneguía

This earthcache is about the Teneguia volcano.
It is driven by a hot spot. This is an area in our Earths crust, which contains hot magma from the earths very inside. This magma is coming up in a so called mantelplume. It melts through the crust and could cause volcanic eruptions. It is independent from the rift or subduction zones on the rims of the tectonic plates. Hot-Spot vulcanism is the result of the slow movement of a tectonic plate across one of this hot regions. So one can explain, why the older islands of the Canaries are lying eastwards and the volcanic activity there is flagged - the hot spot stays, where it is and the ocean bed of the Atlantic extends and moves to the east. Therefore, the younger islands are lying westwards. Whether this phenomenon is existing and if this theory is intrinsic, is currently subject of a major controversy in geology. But we think it is a good explanation for what's going on here, in an area without typical presuppositons for volcanism.
Nevertheless, Teneguia was fed by magma from the mantel plume below. In 1971 it came to an eruption in this most southern part of La Palma. Earthquakes preceded the eruption, which started on October 26 and ended on November 28. The area is quite uninhabitated, but an elderly fisherman came too close to the lava and asphyxiated. There are two lighthouses and a saline nearby the volcano - both installations outlived.

Unfortunately, vine had grown around, so some property damage was caused and a beach was destroyed. Otherwise, the size of the island was extended quite a bit and nature itself was forming a new beach to have fun in the sea. So, in the end, the eruption wasn't a big disaster at all.
Nowadays, the cinder cone volcano Teneguia has become a touristic spot. It is 438 m in height and part of the Monumento Natural de Los Volcanes de Teneguía. Teneguia is considered as activ, that's why it is still observed. You still can smell the sulphorous exhaust there. But the area is, anyhow, regenerating. Next to the barren lava, vine is grown again.

You can reach the site by car (Parking coordinates are given with the waypoints). It is a hot, unsheltered area below the volcano San Antonio. There is lava all around, mainly without growth, so it looks desertlike. You can park your car at the coordinates and walk around. The volcano can be walked around. You can see the prime crater (at the Geocaches' coords.), some side-craters and you can walk to the top, where you have an excellent view around and to the southernmost point of La Palma with its lighthouses and the saline.
There is an information center at the volcano San Antonio (look at the waypoint). Unfortunately an entrance fee is taken.

If you go there, take some solar protection (especially in summer time) with you.
Be careful when its windy! The wind can be strong and the ground is loose!
Therefore you should wear walking-tour shoes or other appropiate equipment.
This area is a natural reserve!
Don't leave the paths - more than ever with your car!
Don't leave any garbage!
And - don't take any plants, stones or something else with you.

What do you have to do to log the cache?

According to the new guidelines for earthcaches, taking a photo is optional. So you don't have to do this. But we think, it is great to have a lot of photographs from the area. So, feel free to do as it is written here in the first place:
Take a photo of you and your GPS in front of a Teneguia crater (around the Geocaches' coordinates). Please add this photo to your log.

Go to the information board (see waypoint "information board" or parking area for the cache) and see, what the volcano is keeping (two things).

In the 'Monumento Natural Volcanes de Teneguia' you can get an audio guide (Audioguia Ruta De Los Volcanes. Be aware! You have to pay a rental fee for it. To rent this stuff is not necessary for this earthcache!). What is station nr. 25 called (its a spanish name!)? This answer could be found on the site, of course. Edit in 2017: No, I it is not to be found anymore. It seems, that the audioguide is no longer existent. Therefore, the correct answer is: Teneguia.

The Lava flowed from the Teneguia volcano to the sea. There were two main directions. One was directly southwest down into the water. On the former stream of lava you can see banana plantation nowadays. The other one flowed just right beside the saline and the two lighthouses to the sea. Estimate how far it has to go before it reached the water. Write down your estimation into your e-mail to us.

Tell us in a short mail (with your geocaching-name as the subject) what you found out.
To get log permission, write your answers to our questions in a e-mail like this:
Substantive of the two things, the volcano is keeping (without space in between) then a "-" and then the last word of the spanish name for station nr. 25 (in standard letters!).

Teneguía - Fuego agrandando la tierra

La Palma, que es una de las Islas Canárias y que así forma parte de España, se formaba originalmente como un monte submarino por actividad volcánica. El fondo de la isla está aproximadamente a 4.000 metros bajo el nivel del mar. El punto más elevado de La Palma es el Roque de los Muchachos, que tiene una altura total de 2.426 msnm. El aspecto de la isla fue formado por el volcán Taburiente y su caída en el mar. Como la Palma todavía está encima de un punto caliente, la actividad volcánica no ha terminado hasta hoy. Desde la ocupación española, había siete erupciones:

El earthcache se trata del volcán Teneguía.
Teneguía está propulsado por un punto caliente. Eso es un parte en la corteza terrestre que contiene magma caliente del interior de la tierra. El magma sube en una pluma volcánica como se llama. Se funde a través de la corteza y puede causar erupciones volcánicas. Es independiente de las grietas o de las zonas de subducción en los bordes de las placas tectónicas. Vulcanismo en puntos calientes ocurre cuando placas tectónicas se mueven por encima de una de esas regiones de puntos calientes. Eso puede explicar porque las islas más antiguas de las Canárias se encuentran hacia el este y la actividad volcánica disminuye - el punto caliente se queda donde está y el fondo del océano Atlántico se extiende y se mueve hacia el este. Por eso, las islas más jóvenes se encuentran hacia el oeste. Hoy en día, es el sujeto de una controversia importante en la geología, si este fenómeno realmente existe y si este teoría es intrínseco. Pero creemos que es una buena explicación para lo que occurre aquí, en una región sin alguna condición previa típica para actividad volcánica.
No obstante, Teneguía es alimentado por magma del pluma volcánica de abajo. En 1971, una erupción ocurrió en esta parte más en el sur de La Palma. Había terremotos antes de esta erupción que comenzó el 26 de octubre y terminó el 28 de noviembre. La región está realmente despoblada, pero un pescador anciano se acercó demasiado a la lava y se sofocó. Había dos faros y unas salinas cerca del volcán - ambos instalaciones perduraban.

Lamentablemente, el volcán produjo daños materiales a los cultivos de vid de la zona y destruyó una playa. Por lo demás, el tamaño de la isla fue ampliado por una parte considerable y la naturaleza misma formaba una nueva playa para divertirse en el mar. Así, a fin de cuentas, la erupción realmente no era un gran desastre.
Hoy en día, el volcán de cono de escoria Teneguía se ha convertido en un polo turístico. Tiene 438 metros de altura y forma parte del Monumento Natural de Los Volcanes de Teneguía. Se considera el Teneguía como activo y por eso se sigue observándolo. Todavía puedes oler las evaporaciones sulfurosas. Pero la zona está regenerando de todas maneras. Al lado de la lava improductiva, se cultiva vid otra vez.

Puedes llegar al sitio en coche (las coordenadas para el aparcamiento vienen con los waypoints). Es una region caliente sin cobijo, al pie del volcán de San Antonio. Hay lava por todas partes y casi no hay plantas, por eso parece un desierto. Puedes aparcar el coche en las coordenadas y dar una vuelta. También puedes caminar alrededor del volcán. Se ve el cráter principal (en las coordenadas del tesoro), algunos otros cráteres y se puede también subir a la cumbre donde hay una vista magnífica de los alrededores y del punto más al sur de La Palma con sus faros y salinas. Hay un centro de información cerca del volcán de San Antonio (ve el waypoint).
Lamentablemente, hay que pagar una entrada.

Si vas allí, lleva contigo algun protección solar (especialmente en el verano).
¡Cuidado cuando hace viento! El viento puede ser intenso y el terreno es mullido.
Por eso, recomendamos que llevases botas deportivas u otro equipamiente apropiado.
Esta región es una reserve natural.
¡No salgas de los caminos - aún menos con el coche!
¡No dejes basura!
¡Y no lleves plantas, piedras u otras cosas contigo!

¿Que tienes que hacer para registrar el cache?

Según las nuevas pautas para earthcaches, sacar una foto es opcional. Así, no tienes que sacar ninguna. Pero pensamos que es genial tener muchas fotos de la region. Entonces siéntate libre para hacer lo que se escribe ahora en primer lugar:

Saca una foto de ti y tu GPS delante del Teneguía cráter (cerca de las coordenadas del geocache).
Añade la foto a tu loc.

Ve a la tabla de informaciones (ve el waypoint "information board" o aparcamiento para el cache) y ve que el volcán guarda (dos cosas).

En el 'Monumento Natural Volcanes de Teneguia' puedes prestar una audioguía (Audioguia Ruta De Los Volcanes. ¡Pero cuidado! Hay que pagar un alquiler. Alquiler la audioguía no es necesario para eso earthcache.). ¿Cómo se llama la estación no. 25 (el nombre español)? Puedes encontrar la respuesta en el terreno mismo, por supuesto. Modificación actual: El Audioguia no existe más. Por lo tanto aquí la respuesta correcta: Teneguia.

La lava fluía del volcán de Teneguía en el mar. Había dos direcciones principales. Una estaba fluyendo directamente al sudoeste en el mar. Donde había el flujo de lava, hoy hay plantaciones de plátanos. El otro flujo fluía directamente al lado de las salinas y de las dos faros en el mar. ¡Evalúa la longitud de su camino hast que el llegaba al agua! Nota tu evaluación en tu e-mail a nosotros. Cuéntanos en un e-mail corto (con tu geocaching nombre como asunto) que has descubierto. Para recibir un permiso para registrar el cache, nota tus respuestas de nuestras preguntas en un e-mail como sigue:
Sustantivo de las dos cosas que el volcán guarda (sin carácter blanco dentro de ellos), pues un "-" y despues la última palabra del nombre español de la estación 25 (en letras estándares).
