You are looking for an innocent looking field with a little known secret past. During the Second World War it was part of the Valley Works in Rhydymwyn.
The cache is NOT at the above coordinates.
Please do NOT enter the field.
You might need a map and compass or suitable GPS with mapping.
You will need to find the clues in TWO of the other Valley Works caches first.
Woodside was the code name given to a field when it was turned into a bulk Chemical Weapon storage facility for the Valley Works in Rhydymwyn. The site was chosen as this narrow field is well covered by the surrounding tree's which made detection from the air difficult. At first the site was temporary while tunnelling of the underground storage facility in Valley was being completed.
When Valleys under ground workings were finished there were still issues with storage. So Woodside became more permanent with the building of extra facility's and more storage. The site also became experimental as it was built as a model for other bases to be built around the country. These Forward Filling Bases would receive and store chemicals and were ready to weaponize it in quick response to any chemical attack on the UK.
The storage at Woodside was in 31 partially buried 55 ton tanks and 1 250 ton tank, all the tanks were heated, heat was provided by a central coke house and instrument room. Woodside had a storage capacity of 1540 tons of mustard gas and 110 tons of tear gas. All the chemicals where moved to site by road in convoy. The route would be closed off to the public, the convoy was guarded by armed police and also had a decontamination unit. When the tanks were full they were buried to provide further cover. Also on site were Loading bays, and Charging bays for filling shells, two houses, a guard house, shower and changing facility’s, decontamination facility’s and a 15 ft wide road connecting it all together. Today you would never know.
There is very little evidence now of what was once here, the only signs left are. At the gate there are signs of the buried guard house remains and signs that the gate was once bigger than it is today. In the opposite corner of the field along the lane there is a dip which was a soak away. There is remains of a track through the Larch trees and a few dips in the field. Everything was removed or buried shortly after the war and the tanks and chemicals were moved under ground at Valley.
To find this cache you must first find two clues which are hidden in two of the other Valley Works caches. The clues will be a bearing. Project a waypoint from the cache containing the clue, then using triangulation to find the location of Woodside. The cache is hidden on a lane within 2.5 miles of the Valley works. Find the gateway to Woodside and the cache is not far away. Hidden within 15 Meters of the gate and on the same side of the lane. It's not in the field this is private land. You can use the spoiler to help identify the field and gateway, if you do please say so in your log. I'd also be interested to know if any geo visitors knew about Woodside?
Be careful on the lanes. Park in the gateway but be respectful of Landowners access. Cache is within 15 Meters of the gate to Woodside.
