Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the published coordinates. The plan was to place this cache at the site of a beacon created after the Spanish moored just off Piel Island to carry out repairs. I visited this site a couple of years ago in the winter when the bracken had died back, this made access a lot easier.

I visited this cache during a walk organised by John Murphy who took us to the top of the hill to visit the site of the beacon. The site has two circular structures: A larger one which was the site of the actual beacon and a smaller circular structure which would have been used for a small fire. The smaller fire would have provided heat for the lookouts manning the beacon and a means of lighting the main beacon if any threat was sighted.

Roa and Piel Island from the beacon

The Spanish armada sailed around Scotland and misjudged how far North they'd headed due to strong headwinds and currents. They turned Southward too early and ran aground in Ireland, Scotland and the West of England. John told us how two or three Spanish ships moored just off Piel Island for repairs. The Beacon was created as a means to raising the alarm just in case the Spanish ever returned.

The published coordinates are where the beacon is located, my intention was to place the cache in that location but it’s not an easy place to access. I’ve decided to make this cache a puzzle cache which makes the visit to the beacon optional.
