The track by this cache is called Aldene Road and originally lead from the old Wadsley village up to the quarries. Aldene was the Saxon lord who, at the time of the Norman Conquest owned the manors of Wadsley, Ughill and Worrall. At the time of the Doomsday Survey all his lands was just laid waste. Although the road is obviously old, the name is not. It is recorded in Sheffield City Council minutes of a meeting held on 1 April 1959 that it was resolved and agreed to change the name of Coal Pit Lane, Wadsley to Aldene Road. Note the date. It is not recorded why the name should be changed, but is caused quite a controversy in the local papers, with claims of newcomers living lower down the road, being snobby and not wanting an address relating to mining while others wanted a more illustrious historic name.
Please ensure cache in hidden after replacing.
These caches are on/near a Local Nature Reserve. Please respect the sensitivity of the area. Thanks are given to Sheffield City Council - Parks and Countryside Office for permission to set these caches.
FTF congratulations to Mr&Mrs Birdwatchdave and Ska-face.
