This cache is a part of The Detroit Institute of Arts Inside/Out program.

Celadon and Amelia, 1793
William Hamilton (1751–1801)
English

This painting is based on a poem that describes a love story for the ages. Celadon and Amelia were the perfect match, two halves of a whole, who shared passion and respect. William Hamilton depicts the tragic moment in the story when their blossoming love was destroyed—Amelia was struck by lightning. Celadon is shown holding his lifeless partner in his arms.

Welcome to Battle Alley. This historic district was once the scene of frequent brawls. In 1880, an uproar between local rowdies and workers of a traveling circus rendered so many people bruised, beaten, and jailed that this street was named "Battle Alley." Carrie A. Nation, "Kansas saloon smasher," came to Holly on August 28, 1908, at the request of the local prohibition committee. Wielding her umbrella, she strode through the alley's bars bellowing about the "Demon Rum" and its sins. In 1910, Battle Alley became the first brick street in the village.
