Geocache Description:

On a round promontory south of Capâlna village you can visit the ruins of one of the main stone fortresses from the Dacian defensive system (a UNESCO World Heritage site) during their wars with Rome.

The fortress's construction was initiated in the middle of the Ist Century AD and served with this purpose until the beginning of the IInd Century AD. A medieval phase (as refuge) can be assumed from archaeological finds. The Dacian fortification was meant to guard a key access to the heart of the mountains and Sarmisegetusa Regia, the capital of the Dacian kingdom. During peace times it is more likely that the fort functioned as a small military camp, headed by a commander, while during war times the number of its military inhabitants increased significantly. The state of the fortress is rather dire but most of its components can be identified. It sustained several campaigns of archaeological excavations, published in form of a monograph.

The cache is a rather large cylindrical plastic container with a red cap and it initially contains a logbook, a pencil and several items for trade (3D cyan magenta glasses, key chain, small polished rock, Camel cigarettes empty metal box. etc). Enjoy! Please hide it well with dry leaves as it can be quite obvious otherwise...
