A pew with a view – CCT North Yorkshire series Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.

Geocache Description:

Situated near Holy Trinity Church in Wensley, the cache is a medium-sized container that can accommodate small trade items and travel bugs. Though the church is not in active use, both it and the churchyard remain consecrated, so please use stealth and discretion when searching for the cache.

Wensley’s Holy Trinity Church is a beautiful medieval parish church with a long history. Built on the foundations of an 8th century Saxon church, the current building was constructed in the 1240s during the reign of Henry III (though it underwent considerable remodeling throughout the medieval period). The church benefitted greatly from the patronage of the Scrope family and later the Orde-Powletts from nearby Bolton Castle. The church contains several memorials to members of these families and a magnificent Jacobean pew for the use of the lords of Bolton.

One of the memorials is a full-length brass effigy of Sir Simon de Wensley, a member of the Scrope family who was rector of the church in the late 1300s. It is thought to be the finest example of a memorial brass in an English parish church. Other highlights of the church include a wooden reliquary (thought to have come from Easby Abbey after its dissolution by Henry VIII) and choir benches wonderfully carved by the “Ripon Carvers” with both real and fantastic animals. Also within the church are 14th century wall paintings of St. Eloi shoeing a horse possessed by the Devil and three worm-ridden dead men – a grim reminder to the living that “as we now are, so shall you be”.

The church no longer functions as a parish church and passed into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) in 2006. The CCT keeps the church open to the public and welcomes geocachers to enjoy this beautiful and unique church. When inside, don’t forget to sign the guestbook!
