In music: lots more variety creeping into the charts with more singles reaching number one; again The Police are Stu's birthday number one with the best selling single of the year Don't Stand So Close to Me; unsurprisingly, John Lennon is the Christmas number one with (Just Like) Starting Over - he's knocked off the top spot for two weeks by St Winifred's school choir with There's No-one Quite Like Grandma before spending 6 more weeks at number one with Imagine and Woman.
Also in 1980: MS Athina B is beached at Brighton becoming a temporary tourist attraction; Radio Caroline host ship Mi Amigo sinks; John Lennon is murdered; Alton Towers development begins.
