Geocache Description:

I decided to place this cache to address a misnomer that has been plaguing this nation for centuries. The cache is located just off of one of Sierra Vista’s jogging paths. Please beware of all of your normal Arizona critters (snakes scorpions, etc.), I have not seen any near here, but that does not mean they are not around.

Growing up I am sure you have all heard of Buffalo references, such as in the song “Home, Home on the Range,” or have heard of the notable “Buffalo Nickel.” These are all improperly named. The “American Buffalo” is actually the American Bison and is related closer to the European Bison than the two true species of Buffalo, the Asian Water Buffalo and the African Buffalo.

Here is a fun fact about the American Bison. Did you know that between 1980 and 1999, more than three times as many people in Yellowstone National Park were injured by bison than by bears? During this period, bison charged and injured 79 people, with injuries ranging from goring puncture wounds and broken bones to bruises and abrasions. Bears injured 24 people during the same time frame.
