JCanyoneer's Weekend
Last weekend, I had some pretty ambitious plans. I wanted to hike part of the highline trail from Pine to Tonto Creek. I figured I needed plenty of rest, so I went to bed at 7:30 on Friday night. I got up at 4:30 am and drove to the Pine Trailhead. I loaded my pack and started hiking. The beginning of the Highline trail has a quite a bit of uphill. This will wear you out fast. By 6:15, I was feeling good and was moving quickly. The fall colors were awesome! But then, nature called, so I found a good place to stop and take a break.

This break lasted longer than expected and drank a little and had a powerbar. I continued on down the trail until I heard something. It was an elk bugle. I couldn't tell if it was a real elk or a hunter, but I stopped and listened for a bit. I started moving again at 7:45 according to my GPS. I ate lunch on the go and finally got to Washington Park (my campsite) just before the sun went down. I fell asleep just as my head hit the pillow as I was exhausted. I knew I had another long day ahead of me, so I set the alarm on my phone for 6:40 am.

I popped up as soon as my alarm went off and ate a quick bite. I loaded my light backpack and headed out. I reached Dude Creek by the time it was 8:00. I saw quite few piles of bear scat and one herd of elk by this point. The sun came out and this section is pretty exposed. I hiked straight through until I reached Bonita Creek and ate lunch at 10:40. After lunch, I made a conscious effort to push through to Tonto Creek with as few stops as possible. I saw 2 other hikers hiking from Tonto Creek to East Verde on this section, but these were the only people I saw in the 2 days I was hiking. The clouds came in right after lunch and made this part of the hike the most enjoyable. I got to my car and had a beer and was on the road home by 6:10 pm. The drive was uneventful other than the clouds finally letting loose around 7:45 just as I entered town.

This is a pretty fun hike but covered a lot of distance. I think next time, I'll plan on three days for this section of the Highline Trail.
