Polkinghorne Beacon is another cache in a series hidden by Nitro929, Nvh2ofowler and the lazyts team marking the Transcontinental Airmail Route across northern Nevada.
Regular scheduled night service on the Transcontinental Air Mail Route started on July 1,1924. Operating around the clock, Air Mail was able to cross the nation in 34 hours westbound and 29 hours eastbound. High-intensity beacons were established approximately 10 miles apart along the airways.
We again could not find any history on this beacon. The location of Pleasant Valley CAA 31 which was located at the old Pearce Ranch can be seen in the distance.
The tower is a 20’ IDECO Airway Beacon Tower. IDECO Towers with small houses built in the base were furnished for housing the small electric light plants or acetylene tanks. The beacon is in very good shape. I was able to read the design number and serial number on the AGA Acetylene light regulator.
We took a .75 mile hike to get to the beacon site.
