In 1924 the Meridian Bridge was compleated at a cost of 1.3 million. There after, Yankton became known as the Bridge City (previously River City). The Meridian bridge still spans the river at the south end of Walnut Street. An interesting old legend states an early Yankton ordinance which confined WOMEN to the south side of Third Street! That's why to this day all the bars are located on the north side of Third Street. Check it out at Third & Walnet near Meridian Bridge.
