Grotta dello Smeraldo
The Grotta dello Smerlado (Italian for "Emerald Cave") is a sea cave. It´s located in the comune Conca dei Marini in the province of Salerno, Campania on the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most famous and beautiful stretchs of coastline in Italy.
It is one of several sea caves, worldwide, that is flooded with a brilliant blue or emerald light. The quality and nature of the color in each cave is determined by the unique lighting conditions in that particular cave. The grotto, which is located along the Amalfi Coast, is partly filled with water. The surface area of the water measures roughly 45 x 32 meters.
Unlike the more famous Blue Grotto a few miles to the west on Capri (there is another Earthcache), the Grotta dello Smeraldo has no natural outlet above the waterline. The only opening to the outside world is just below the water level. Refracted sunlight entering the cavern through the opening gives the water its characteristic emerald glow during daylight hours.
The absence of a natural opening above the waterline meant that the grotto’s existence remained unknown for many years, so the cave was discovered by a fisherman named Luigi Buoncore in 1932 who took a look through a hole on the rock.
GEOLOGY
The cliff was formed through erosion. The Amalficoast exists of limestone, so the sea eroded the cliff because of the continuous waves, which are bouncing through the stone. In the beginning of the Emerald Cave,it wasn´t in the sea, it was above the former sea level. During this age stalactites and stalagmites took shape. Then the sea level rised, so the cave slowly was partially flooted up by the sea. Today the former entrance is a tunnel under the water, where the light comes into the cave and named it „Emerald Cave“ because of the color of the water.
The grotto is accessible from Strada Statale 163, the main road along the Amalfi Coast. In front of the entrance to the cave there is a parking area for parking your cachemobile. Then you´ve to walk through the gate to elevators, which are bringing you to the sea level. You can reach to the "Grotta dello Smeraldo" also by boat; infact from the Amalfi's harbour many boats go to and for the cave, each hour.
If you want to take a look inside, you have to pay for it. But then a guide let you sit down on a boat and rows you through the cave. Then you can see the emerald light. Unfortunately, the guide just speaks english, and so he sits quiet in the boat and doesn´t talk with you. But another guide sings in the cave, so that it sounds right good in it.

Die Grotta dello Smerlado( italienisch für „Smaragdgrotte“) ist eine Seegrotte in der Kommune Conca dei Marini in der Provinz Salerno, Campania an der Amalfiküste. Diese ist eine der schönsten und bekanntesten Küstenabschnitte in Italien.
Die Grotte ist eine von den Seehöhlen weltweit, die mit einem wunderschönen strahlend blauen oder smaragdgrünen Licht durchflutet wird. Die Qualität und Intensität der Farbe wird durch die einzigartige Lichtverhältnisse in der jeweiligen Höhle bestimmt. Die Grotte ist teilweise mit Wasser gefüllt; die Oberfläche des Wassers misst rund 45 x 32 Meter.
Im Gegensatz zur berühmten Blauen Grotte auf Capri hat die Grotta dello Smeraldo keine natürliche Öffnung oberhalb der Wasserlinie. Während der Tagesstunden gibt das Licht, was durch eine Öffnung unter Wasser hereinströmt, dem Wasser sein smaragdgrünes Leuchten. Aufgrund, dass es nur eine Öffnung unter Wasser gab, hieß natürlich, dass die Höhle lange unentdeckt blieb, so wurde die Höhle erst 1932 von einem Fischer namens Luigi Buoncore , welcher durch ein Loch im Felsen guckte, entdeckt.
GEOLOGIE
Die ganze Amalfiküste wurde durch Erosion erschaffen. Die Küste besteht aus Kalkstein, welche durch die kontinuierlichen Wellen des Meeres, welche gegen die Küste schlagen, erodiert. Am Anfang der Geschichte der Smaragdgrotte, war diese über Wasser, sodass Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten Gestalt annahmen. Dann aber stieg der Meeresspiegel, sodass die Höhle allmählich überflutet wurde. Heute ist der ehemalige Eingang unter Wasser. Dort kommt das Licht hindurch, welches der Grotte ihren Namen gab.
Die Grotte ist über die Strada Statale 163, der Hauptstraße entlang der Amalfiküste, zu erreichen. Vor dem Eingangsschild ist auch ein Parkplatz, wo ihr euer Auto abstellen könnt. Dann müsst ihr durch den kleinen Torbogen gehen und mit den Fahrstühlen auf Meeresniveau fahren. Von dort aus ist es nur noch ein paar Schritt zum Eingang der Höhle. Ihr könnt aber auch von Amalfi aus auf ein Boot umsatteln, und euch zur Grotte schippern lassen.
Wenn ihr euch die Grotte angucken wollt, müsst ihr jedoch dafür bezahlen. Wenn ihr dies tut, werdet ihr mit einem Boot durch die Höhle gerudert, und könnt das Schimmern des Lichts hautnah erleben. Leider kann der Guide bloß italienisch (wenn ich das richtig erfasst habe) sprechen, sodass er nur stumm euch rumrudert. Ein anderer singt aber auch mal, und erzählt etwas über die Stalagmiten und Stalaktiten.

- 3. Wann kann man das Licht am besten sehen (Tageszeit) , nicht nur weil die ganzen anderen Touristen da Essen sind

In Costiera Amalfitana, a 5 Km da Amalfi, nell’incantevole baia di Conca dei Marini, si trova la Grotta dello Smeraldo.
Scoperta nel 1932 da un pescatore locale, la Grotta dello Smeraldo di Conca de' Marini deve il suo nome alla particolare colorazione assunta dall'acqua che riflette la luce che filtra dalle rocce di quel tratto di Costiera Amalfitana, creando effetti cromatici dalle strabilianti sfumature: dal blu cobalto, al turchese al verde smeraldo.
La Grotta dello Smeraldo, che nell'antichità non era invasa dall'acqua, è larga circa 30 metri per 60 e alta 24 metri nei punti più alti, ed è ricca di colonne, stalattiti e stalagmiti dalle forme bizzarre,che creano un ambiente incantato, tappa obbligata per i turisti che visitano ogni anno la magnifica Costiera Amalfitana.
L'ingresso della Grotta dello Smeraldo è raggiungibile dalla SS 163, la suggestiva strada panoramica che va da Salerno fino a Positano. Successivamente, mediante l'ascensore o l'apposita scala, si raggiunge l'interno della cavità naturale.
Da tutte le principali località della Costiera Amalfitana e Sorrentina ci sono poi traghetti che organizzano escursioni guidate, oltre la possibilità di affittare zattere, condotte da marinai, che guidano il turista in questa breve (l'escursione dura circa 30 minuti), ma affascinante avventura. Nelle sue acque è possibile altresì ammirare un affascinante e originale presepe subacqueo, in ceramica di Vietri sul Mare, posto sul fondo della grotta dello Smeraldo a circa 4 metri di profondità. Ogni anno, nel periodo natalizio, dei sub si immergono nelle acque cristalline della Costiera Amalfitana, e adagiano il bambino Gesù sul fondale della grotta.
Dal 2005 poi, su iniziativa dell'Azienda di Soggiorno e Turismo di Amalfi, si organizza, nel periodo estivo, per incrementare e diversificare l'offerta turistica della Costiera Amalfitana, una originale kermesse intitolata "Le magie alla Grotta dello Smeraldo": una straordinaria miscellanea di eventi, dalla musica, al teatro al cabaret, che si alternano sul piazzale antistante la la Grotta trasformato per l’occasione in una vera e propria piazza sullo splendido mare della Costiera Amalfitana.
Il tutto condito dalla degustazioni dei prodotti tipici della Costiera, tra tutti le sfogliatelle Santa Rosa inventate alcuni secoli fa dalle suore dell’omonimo convento di Conca dei Marini.
GEOLOGIA
"Grotta dello Smeraldo" ha karst tipico ed elementi di caverne marini. All'inizio la caverna fu al di sopra del mare e, durante quest'età, le stalattiti e le stalagmiti presero la forma. Lentamente, quando il livello del mare rised sulla costa, la caverna fu parzialmente flooted su dal mare. Oggi, la caverna è collegata al mare attraverso un tunnel 12 mts a lungo e a 4 mts in profondità.
