Geocache Description:

The cache is best accessed from Dunbeath harbour in Caithness (N 58 14; W 003 25) where there is ample parking. The route to the cache is a pleasant 20 minute stroll along a level coastal path, although the latter stages are not suitable for buggies.

The path leads to a historic cave where local travellers lived in the 19th century until the local laird closed off the cave with railings as he and his guests could see their traditional, and occasionally less than sober, conduct from his castle. The access to the cave is tidal and the rocks slippery, but the cache is before that, on an accessible ledge at a landward facing cliff.

Dunbeath is small fishing village, whose most famous son is the author Neil Gunn, 1891 – 1973. The term “Grey Coast” comes from the title of one of his books. Another book is the allegorical “Highland River”, but the most famous is probably “The Silver Darlings” made into a film in the 1950’s, and the most easily read of the books. A statue of a young boy with a huge salmon commemorates his works and is to be seen at the harbour.

The modern Dunbeath has access to 4000+ years of heritage from an Iron Age broch to recent crofting implements etc, with the Heritage Centre on the south side of the river, and the Laidhay Croft museum to the north of the village. There are two shops, a local inn, with pub grub in the Bay Owl restaurant, a popular campsite close to the A9, and a summer-time café at Laidhay.
