Geocache Description:

Medicinal Spring water was discovered along Auchinlay by the Crofts of Cromlix. The cache is placed by a gate (yett) into the field. It is possible to trace a route down the field and over the other side of the current A9 down to the Laighills.

The credit for the discovery in 1813 is due to a local Alexander Coldstream, a his attention was caught by pigeons which flocked to the springs from great distances!!
Prior to this discovery the only other similar well in Scotland was in Pitcaithly.

An analysis of the water showed that a pint contained 47 grains of solid matter of which principaly it was 24 parts soda and 17 parts lime!!

In 1828 a hut was erected on the northeast side of the Laighills for those who came to Dunblane to drink or bathe in the waters at the 'Well Hoose'. This consisted of 3 apartments; one reserved for Ladies another for Gentlemen. " In the central division Katie Malloch in a lavender print dress with white apron and mutch took charge fo the water, heating it for those who prefered to drink it warm. The water was brought in every morning by horse and cart driven by a man named Gow nicknamed Lord Raglan. The cart crossed the river by a ford. One of the attractions of taking the waters was the caustic conversation of Katie Malloch in her old-fashioned garb."
