Escape from
Chapin Park
Chapin Park is one of Wichita's newer recreation areas
and preserves. This 190 acres, situated between
Hydraulic, MacArthur, and bordered by the river, consists of
gravel walking trails, mountain bike trails, an RC model
airplane flying area, and Wichita's first ever Dog park. Chapin has
some interesting history of which may not be commonly known. It was
a hog farm up until 1954 when the City then acquired and converted
it into the Chapin Landfill. The landfill operated up until 1987
when it was closed and the Brooks landfill then became the primary
waste facility for Wichita. After several stable years, the City
took action around 2009 and decided to convert it into the
delightful park you see today. Little evidence can be found today
identifying the area as a previous landfill, until you visit this
Geocache. After spending much time in the park over the last couple
years, I was surprised to find an abundance of trash and debris to
the east while exploring the hidden trails along the river. Please
be careful while navigating this area. You are looking for a 30 Cal
Ammo Can hidden amongst some of the old concrete debris. Please use
the supplied parking and trailhead coordinates and Do Not use the
gated gravel road to the west running along the south side of the
river as this is private property. Take the trail down under the
bridge and hike along the river trail to the cache.
Enjoy!
