Geocache Description:

Discover why Katikati is such a great place to retire! But watch out for the muggles, they will be watching you from their windows! Recommend you take a drink and and a bite to eat. Expect to be out at least 1.5hours it's a 5.5km walk returning to your car.

The late Brian Chudleigh bird photographer, conservationist and Katikati local convinced a land owner and a community to save this unique wetland habitat. Since 2008, what used to be drained paddocks, has been modified into brackish wetland for numerous bird species. We're proud to have this wild place so closely intregrated with our urban landscape. Count the birds, but focus on your waypoints!

The irony is that past the wetland (which we hope will one day not look so man made), pristine estuarine-mangrove habitat is not so valued. Evidence can be seen of how the regional council mows it down with heavy machinery! These rapid-spreading native trees enjoy the downstream benefits of nutrients and sediment from the rural landscape up-river.

More recently, co-operative Government, Regional Council, landowners and volunteers are working together to revegetate and stabilise stream banks upstream. This is to absorb nutrient run-off and halt the sedimentation problem. The river is becoming cleaner every year as a result.

All along the Uretara river you will see the planting efforts of the Uretara Estuary managers group. It is hoped that one day this will extend un-interupted from the estuary, all the way upstream to the bushline on the Kaimai ranges.

Consider taking a drink bottle and maybe a bite to eat. The journey is 5.4 km return walk. Dogs will love the trip. However at the time of writing council are proposing to make it mandatory for dogs to be leashed for some parts. Be weary of poison bait stations along the walkway. Some sections of the walkway look like people's gardens. The locals like to mai ntain the Council reserve which is frequented by numerous walkers.

Park your car at the start co-ordinates.

Find the first waypoint at

S 037 degrees 32.520 E 175 degrees 55.184

Once there, look for co-ordinates to the next waypoint and continue on in this fashion multiple times.

At some waypoints you will find several sets of co-ordinates. Proceed to each of them in order from top to bottom. Pen & paper recommended.

Good luck & enjoy!
