You Only Live Twice Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Coralgeo: For Your Eyes Only (GCFFF, aka FEYO), a James Bond-themed multi-cache, was placed back in July 2001 by Iron Chef (may he RIP), Raygun_88, and me (Coralgeo) when there were no other caches along the Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay portion of the Hwy 1. It was meant to provide a nice day tour, and hopefully expose geocachers to some interesting sights. In January 2002, For Your Eyes Only was supplemented with this second mystery cache, You Only Live Twice (GC358D, aka YOLT), which was meant to close the loop on the James Bond saga. To gain the coordinates for You Only Live Twice, one had to solve For Your Eyes Only first.

Fast forward to 2020, the summer of COVID and the CZU fire. I disabled both caches knowing that several of the clue locations for FYEO fell within the fire danger zone. Although all clue locations are now fully accessible, I’ve made the decision to archive the geocaches. In the past 18-19 years, FYEO was found 72 times, with 10 DNFs; YOLT was found 50 times, with 2 DNFs. As a long and time-consuming puzzle/multi-cache series, I’m not surprised at the low number of finds. And as more geocaches are now available along this stretch of coast, easier geocaches than these are likely to be chosen by folks.

It was a hard decision to make, especially knowing that these caches are some of the oldest in the Santa Cruz/San Mateo County area, but it was time. GeoTigger65 and I made one last pass today to pick up the containers from both (luckily we found them—ha!).

Take care, and cache on!

Geocache Description:

This is an extension of an existing multi-cache. You WILL need to solve For Your Eyes Only before following this cache. It is the last in this particular Bond adventure, and it will explain many parts of For Your Eyes Only. The closest parking is at the coordinates listed above.

Central Coast Geocachers of CaliforniaWe have been going through more declassified files at a certain undisclosed top-secret government facility near Santa Cruz, and another series of documents has turned up regarding the supposed fictional character, James Bond, 007.

Partial transcript from NSA electronic surveillance tapes, location not recorded, August 17, 1966

[unintelligible]…laugh at your feeble attempts, Mr. Bond, to thwart our efforts to take over [deleted]. We have ways of protecting our resources that are beyond your wildest imagination. Do not try to stop us! If you want to see Mr. [deleted], liaison to the British Undersecretary for Special Operations, alive again, you must bring the ransom to these coordinates [deleted]° N. Latitude and [deleted]° W. Longitude. I suggest you hurry, I am not a patient man, Mr. Bond. And if you think you can trace this call, forget it [unintelligible]! [end of transmission]

RE: Our friends in California inform us that Bond delivered the package, but unfortunately he has been captured by SPECTRE. We must stop the kidnappers by alternate means. Secure the release of our diplomat through American connections. As always we shall disavow any knowledge should this leak to the international press corps.

Page A8 headline, Boston Globe, August 18, 1966

KIDNAPPED UK OFFICIAL FREED KIDNAPPERS MISSING, PRESUMED DEAD
Case file no. [deleted], CIA Headquarters, Langley, VA, August 24, 1966
ANALYSIS: Although Bond admittedly recalled delivering the ransom in our interviews with him, during the mission blunt trauma to the head rendered him unconscious. He had no recollection of the location of the ransom drop site because of amnesia. NSA claims that their files do not show any record of Bond’s movements during this time. I would think a thorough search through certain offices might turn up something.

At this point in the investigation however we are uncertain whether the ransom was picked up by SPECTRE or whether their agents were eliminated before they could reach it. To our knowledge, reviewing all available evidence, the location is unknown and the ransom is unrecoverable. We agents have pieced this together:

1. A ransom was dropped somewhere that only Bond, NSA, and the kidnappers knew about.
2. NSA did not inform the CIA about the location of the ransom drop.
3. Bond had amnesia about the location of the ransom drop.
4. M knows about the top-secret drop site but he did not know the ransom drop location.
5. M left instructions for Bond in that top-secret location.
6. Bond did not disclose the location of the top secret drop site near the "three palms."
7. The ransom never surfaced. It may still be where Bond left it.
8. Perhaps M’s instructions would help us figure out the ransom location, but we agents do not know the location of this drop site.
But of course if you were able to solve the complete mystery of "For Your Eyes Only," YOU ALREADY KNOW the top secret drop location, "Three Palms." By the way, do you know what the acronym SPECTRE stands for? (see hint for answer)
