Geocache Description:

Not intended to be an EZ P & G. Replace any diversions exactly as you find them. NOT in a tire. Based upon finders responses, we'll change the difficulty rating accordingly. This is near the GCYA64 Downtown Stanley cache site that was archived in 2009.

Stanley is a ranching and farming community named after one of the engineers on the New Mexico Central Railway. Settlement began in 1902 and was a stopping point on the railroad between Kennedy (on the Santa Fe RR between Cerrillos and Lamy) and Torrance (on the Union Pacific RR between Corona and Vaughn).

The train would pick up ore from the San Pedro and Ortiz mines, lumber from the sawmill on Rowe Mesa, cattle from the ranches, milk from the nearby dairies and pinto beans from the dry-land farming.

At one time Stanley had over 250 people, 2 hotels, 3 general stores, a bar and other usual businesses for a village this size.

Stanley is honored to be the home of New Mexico's longest serving governor, Bruce King and his First Lady, Alice. It is also home of the Landon Store that was in operation from 1934 to 2000.....now it houses a museum of artifacts of the area along with antique barbed wire and is open free to the public on an appointment basis.
