Geocache Description:

This is a rebirth of an old archived cache GC1AA9E, Basingstoke Canal - Tank Trap. Because there is another cache near old coordinates, we have hidden it to the new location, but it's not far from the original. Thanks to douglasf for the container. THERE'S NO NEED TO JUMP OVER ANY BARBED WIRE! Just follow the canal path till you see the pillbox on your right side (if coming from east). Take a path to the pillbox and then go and find the cache nearby.

The Basingstoke Canal is an inland waterway, running from Basingstoke in Hampshire to the River Wey Navigation in Surrey. In 1940 the canal formed part of the General Head Quarters (GHQ) line, built as part of a national system of defences to resist the Nazi’s planned operation Sea Lion. The defences included concrete and brick-built pillboxes, anti-tank obstacles and rows of posts set in concrete to support lines of barbed wire. The pill boxes provided bases for Spigot mortars and Vickers machine guns. You can still see the signs in the form of pill boxes and tank traps. There is one pill box near the cache and on your way (if coming from East) to the cache you can see the huge concrete blocks that were moved into place to deter tanks from following the route up the canal. You can clearly see 4 and if you look carefully you will see more dumped in the woods. Behind the traps (and covered in ivy) is another pill box. Enjoy your walk! We saw our first Kingfisher when hiding this cache. See this link http://www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk/sitemappage.htm
