Kalktuffquellen - Tufa springs
Im Müllerthal, der kleinen luxemburgischen Schweiz, befindet sich im Waldstück "Paaschent", nahe dem Ufer an der Schwarzen Ernz eine der seltenen, sogenannten Kalktuff-Quellen.
In Müllerthal, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, you can find in the forest "Paaschent", near the shores of the Black Ernz. one of the rare, so-called tufa sources.
Solche Kalktuffbildungen entstehen nur unter ganz bestimmten Voraussetzungen und kommen in diesen Breiten eher selten vor. Kalktuff ist ein poröses, noch junges "sekundäres" Sediment. "Sekundär", weil Kalksedimente eines Erdzeitalters nach chemischer Kohlensäure-Lösungsverwitterung und Ausfällung erneut sedimentieren.
Such tufa formations occur only under very specific conditions and their occurrence in this latitudinal zone's are rather rare. Tufa is a porous, still young "secondary" sediment. "Secondary", because carbonate sediments settle out a geological era after chemical weathering of carbonic acid solution and precipitate again.
Kalktuffquellen entstehen dort, wo Wasser an die Oberfläche tritt. Das im Wasser enthaltene Kohlendioxyd entweicht und wird zusätzlich von Pflanzen zur Photosynthese entzogen. Zurück bleibt das unlösliche Kalziumkarbonat, das auf den Moosen und Algen als Kruste ausfällt: so entsteht der sehr leichte und poröse Kalktuff. Weiters zeichnen sich diese durch einen eher geringen Nährstoffgehalt aus.
Tufa springs occur where water rises to the surface. The carbon dioxide contained in the water escapes and is removed in addition to photosynthesis of plants. This leaves the insoluble calcium carbonate, which precipitates on the mosses and algae crust: this creates the very light and porous tufa. Furthermore, these are characterized by a rather low nutrient content.
Zahlreiche endemische Formen sind in den isolierten Quellstandorten zu finden. Da erst ein geringer Teil der Kalktuffquellen auf ihre Fauna und Flora hin untersucht wurde, ist anzunehmen, dass erst ein Bruchteil der in Kalktuffen lebenden Arten bekannt ist. Eine Kalktuffquelle ist ein sehr sensibler Lebensraum. Die wichtigste Maßnahme zu ihrem Schutz ist, sie vor Eingriffen und vor Änderungen in ihrem Umfeld zu bewahren.
Numerous endemic forms are found in the isolated source locations. Since only a small part of the tufa springs on its flora and fauna has been examined, it is likely that only a fraction of the known species living in tufa sources. A tufa source is a very sensitive habitat. The most important measure is to protect, preserve them from encroachment and to make changes in their environment.
