McDonald Woods
Visitors will enjoy 3.8 miles of trails for biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. In addition, a short 0.3-mile wood chip trail is open for hiking and cross-country skiing. McDonald Woods also features drinking fountains, picnic tables and restrooms near the entrance parking lot.
Location
McDonald Woods Forest Preserve is located in northern Lake County near Lindenhurst.
The entrance and parking area are located on Grass Lake Road, just west of Route 45 and east of Route 83.
History
A glacial landscape of rolling hills, steep ravines and great wetlands, McDonald Woods owes much of its picturesque beauty to former landowner A.B. McDonald. In the 1940s, McDonald created a private nature preserve. He excavated three large lakes and planted extensive pine forests that continue to provide important habitat for local wildlife.
