Geocache Description:

Please return this one to its HANGING position with the switch off. The varmints here don't need man-made devices. Watch for snakes and other desert critters. The San Cristobal Pueblo ruins and cemetery is located on private property with NO trespassing; therefore, this cache is offset to the west and south.

The San Cristobal Pueblo Cemetery, one of the oldest in the area, is adjacent to the old mission ruins, visible to the northeast from this cache site.

San Cristobal Pueblo was in its peak in 1400. Its Indian name was Yam-p'-ham-ba, a member of the southern Tewas. Nothing but ruins remain today, with the mission chapel walls standing majestically above and on the banks of the San Cristobal Arroyo. This chapel was built by the Spaniards in 1620 with their priests and the cheap Indian labor on hand.

The village was abandoned sometime in the 1600s because of drought or warfare.
