This is a 3 part cache. First you will need to go to the squirrel cage jail to get the coordinates for the second location. The coordinates to the second point can be found at the first location. The jail was constructed from material that came from this location. Find the Bench Mark located at the second location on the North Wall 8" West of the NE corner 4 feet off the ground. You will need the date on this Bench Mark to find the final cache.
The Squirrel Cage Jail is located a couple blocks just west of the courthouse in Gallatin, MO. It was built in 1889. It is one of the three remaining rotating jails in the United States. One is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa and the other in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Upon entering the jail, you will find the Sheriff's living quarters. This is the only jail to have the Sheriff's living quarters attached. The first part of the jail that can be entered is the jail kitchen. The Sheriff's wife would cook for the inmates, as well as her family. The original hand crank is still in place, as well as the "grub hole" which is where the inmates food was put through. The inside of the jail is very unique. The door still opens to let the prisoners in and out of, however it does not turn anymore. One side of the jail is still in tact with the bars still up and the other side is open to where you can see and go into the actual jail cells. The walls are covered with graffiti from past inmates. Tours inside the jail can be arranged by calling 660-663-3222 which is the Daviess County Library (there's a cache there also). The clue is not inside the jail and can be accessed without going inside. Bench Marks are another form of geocaching and a link to them can be found on the Geocaching Home Page in the lower right hand corner. For ones in this area type in the Zip Code 64640. While you are there there are 4 Bench Marks you can log. Use the date taken from the Bench Mark as ABCD to solve for the final location: N39° (36+AB).166 W093° (24+CD).009 There is safe parking 135 yards East of the final location. Please park there.
